报告简介

In this lecture, I would like to introduce you to the research activities of Yoshida group and draw your attention to the chances of studies in Yamagata University Japan.

Our group is specialized in electrochemical and chemical processing of compound semiconductors and their hybrids with functional organic molecules. They are to be used in renewable energy systems such as solar cell, electrocatalysis and energy storage.
If we aim to obtain all the energy needed for all the people living on the earth, we need 200 TW solar panel, whose size is 1/4 of Japan. If their lifetime is 20 years, we have to continue to produce 10 TW every year just for the replacement (current production about 40 GW/yr.). That creates enough reasons to study organic solar cells, based on non-toxic abundant elements and printable with minimal process energy. OPVs can also be flexible, light-weight and colorful to find new area of applications such as powering wearable devices.
The cost of PV electricity has been significantly reduced over the last decade owing to the efforts of Chinese manufacturers. The cost of power production in fact is no longer the limiting factor to increase use of renewable energy. The problem is the lack of storage. An economical, reliable energy storage with a huge capacity is needed to rely on PV and wind whose energy production naturally fluctuate. A redox flow battery (RFB), which is like a reversible fuel cell, can be the solution and we started our efforts to develop new RFB systems.

Yamagata University puts a special emphasis on studies of organic systems. Yonezawa enjoys its dynamic 4 seasons with its beautiful surroundings, offering a lot of experiences and delicious foods. YU also offers a special course for global leadership (iFront program) in which two of my Chinese students are studying. I encourage you to consider studying in YU!
